As she gets a bit older I hope she realizes my time on earth is not spent following HER FB page.

I originally went on FB to keep in touch with all my 50-something friends from way back when but, as I began 'liking' various pages I discovered quite a few of them have origins in Scotland and Italy- my familial homelands! Now I belong to as many as I can find (although the Italian ones are a bit more difficult-learning Italian is on my bucket list).

Here's where my concern comes in...While on those pages I peruse the names of members and friends; if I see a name that is similiar to one in my genealogy research my heart and brain race! Since this is my genealogy blog I felt it imperative to include this information here.

You see the Adirondacks are where I have spent my summers my whole life. It is a very big part of me as it was part of my parents and has become a huge part of my daur's life. I met my husband there as well so it is a very special place to us all.

Here is how it came to be... my mother was from Glasgow Scotland, my dad was from Albany NY, I was born and live in PA, my husband was from Long Island NY and somehow this all determined my (as well as my daur's) lineage.
My mom and dad vacationed (in the 1930s) in the ADKs (as kids) but didn't know each other. Years later when I came along we began to vacation there.
My husband and his family vacationed there and we met as little kids.
Nearly thirty years later we got married; and had our daur.
We continue to summer there; my daur is an ADK-er too.
Sounds simple enough but the details are almost "Que Sera, Sera"-like! But it's in the book so you'll have to wait and see...

Anyway! The schedule (thus far) is listed on the side panel

The book will also be available on Amazon.com and my website http://www.marypaladin.com/ in July.
If you live in the ADK region of NY I hope you can stop by! there will be more signings to come so please check my website!

One Step Closer...

Got word today that the DNA kits are on their way. I am hoping it will crack open some of the Italian walls that are hindering my research.

At Laaaaast (my cousin is gonna swab)...

The Etta James song came to my mind when I received my (male) cousin's recent e-mail.

We are actually going to move forward with the DNA testing and I am quite excited! Ancestry.com is one of my favorite 'hangouts'; I must make an attempt to convincingly order myself NOT click on my Family Tree Maker in the morning-or else I am still there at supper time! I have made many discoveries, in just the last year, that have only whet my appetite. I struggle with the "wee ghosties" that sit on my shoulder coaxing me on every day.

As the daur of a Scottish immigrant mother and a first generation Italian American father I was raised to appreciate my ancestry. My Scottish research has flourished of late but, the Italian side is lacking, sadly. The language barrier and the sparseness of the Italian records that are available have been the roadblocks. But just when it gets frustrating those kilted, wee ghosties begin with their chattering inside my poor noggin' and get me searching for the crack that will break down the wall...
